Barn Wood Resources

Information on how Aged Woods® makes their barn wood products – Barn wood arrives at our yard in two forms; beams and other structural members, and barn siding. Before the beams can be milled, metal (mostly nails) must be found and removed. After the metal is removed, the planks are stacked for storage in our warehouse where they will await kilning. Kiln drying lowers the moisture content of the planks prior to milling assuring a stable finished product. Kilning also raises the temperature of the wood killing any resident insects.

Black's Farmwood – reclaimed hand hewn barn beams, weathered barn siding and rustic wide plank flooring – "At that time, the British had to come over to start these logging colonies to cut old-growth oaks. They would float these pieces of lumber - which were 24 inches by 24 inches by 50 feet - back home. A lot of them sunk," he continued. Black sold them to be used as timbers in a home in Atherton. In another case, he managed to obtain lumber from an 1870s shipwreck off the coast of Washington. These stories make the wood more valuable to customers. "It has a pedigree," Black said. "If you've seen what 100 years of rain and snow can do to a piece of wood, it's so beautiful."

"As suburbanization takes over the . . . countryside, barns fall out of favor when farming declines. Often, barns are lost to bulldozers. Nothing gets saved. John High has a better idea. He saves and recycles them." "I knew there was a lot of craftsmanship and hard work that was going to die if somebody didn't do something about it." "We'll recycle the whole barn. It'll sell like hotcakes: People building barns. People building houses. People building houses to look like barns. People fixing up barns to look like houses. This barn will live for another hundred years in a hundred different places."

Display Cabinets built from reclaimed vintage barn wood. The barns were built in the 1800's and early 1900's, and have come down due to tornadoes, and wind storms. This wood once stood steadfastly as part of a barn providing shelter for animals and farm equipment for many years. These old barns that were once a part of a way of life in America are slowly disappearing from our road sides. You can have a piece of that history in your home with a beautiful display cabinet constructed from this vintage wood.

Barn Restoration – In the summer of 2003, I was faced with the same difficult decision that thousands of other barn owners have faced in recent decades with the vast majority taking a different path than the one I choose. Years of neglect had finally taken its toll on the family barn. For quite some time the barn itself was of little use. It had rotted away and powder post beetles had weakened floor beams in all but one bay. The roof was leaking, broken and missing windows and doors all indicated that the barn was doomed. Everything pointed to a lost cause.

The distinctive markings in your flooring have unique characteristics with authentic charm and beauty; whether you are looking for rustic charm for the cabin or the old country feel for your home. History of the barnboard is sourced out through family, traced through County/Government records, and accounts given by the local farmers in the area on each barn to gain as accurate a history as possible on the barns we purchase. However as some families have left the area, or in some cases, no longer exist we do our utmost to uncover the history of every barn. Each Barn wood order receives a parchment on the history we have uncovered as authentication of the Barn woods antique status.
